New proposed dam on Lake Sarah should have no influence on water levels, invasive species

Murray County has been chosen for funding in the amount of $333,000 in a Conservation Partners Legacy grant for Lake Sarah Outlet Modifications.

With the Murray County Board’s blessing, the County partnered with Houston Engineering to develop a plan to replace the cement-style Lake Sarah Dam with Rock Arch Rapids.

The reimbursable grant funds will expire June 30, 2025.

The project will be engineered, designed, permitted and bid out sometime this summer, with construction estimated to begin as early as this fall.

“It’s deteriorating,” said Justin Hoffman, Murray County Parks director. “This all started with Lime Lake Dam down by Avoca — that one was in much worse condition than this one. We got some grant funds to repair that one; then the engineer mentioned that the Lake Sarah one needed to be improved, so we decide to start looking for funding for that one as well.”
