A Celebration of Life Service for Eugene “Gene” Harnack, age 94 of Windom, will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at the LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom with Reverend David L. Birch officiating. Full military honors provided by American Legion Post #206 of Windom will take place at the funeral home immediately after the service at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the Lamberton Cemetery in Lamberton, MN at a later date.
Visitation will be from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 9 at the LaCanne Family Funeral Home in Windom.
Eugene “Gene” Roy Harnack was born on April 14, 1924, in Revere, Minnesota to the late Clarence L. and Edith (Dagner) Harnack. He received his education in the Revere area. Upon graduating from high school, Gene enlisted in the United State Army first living in Georgia and then being deployed to Germany until being honorably discharged and returning to Revere.
On October 23, 1946, Gene was united in marriage to Lila Mae Coulter at the Church of Christ in Lamberton. This marriage was blessed with two sons, Tom and Jim. In 1950, Lila and Gene moved to Revere for ten years and then to Tracy until 1972 when they moved to Windom and lived ever since. Through the years, Gene was the Co-op Grain Elevator manager in Tracy and then in Windom for 50 years until his retirement in 1993. He then started working for Peterson Feeds in Windom for many years until just a few months ago.
Gene recently became a resident of Good Samaritan Society-Sogge Memorial in Windom where he passed away on Thursday evening, February 28, 2019 with his family at his side, at the age of 94 years.
Gene was a longtime, dedicated member of the Church of Christ in Lamberton where he was a treasurer and elder. He also was a lifetime member of American Legion Post #206 in Windom. Gene will be remembered for playing cards, love of chocolate and being an avid outdoorsman. His greatest enjoyment came from being with family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Gene is survived by his two sons and their spouses, Tom (Renee) Harnack of Windom; Jim (Dawn) Harnack of Dallas Center, IA; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Jason Harnack; Lindsay (Toren) Bires and their daughter, Ashlyn Lila and Brielle Mae; Amy (Toby) Perdue and their children, Kylie and Carlie Mae; Eric (Tonya Vitzthum) Harnack; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents and wife, Lila Mae Harnack.
