Merlyn Seaton, age 73, of Balaton, Minnesota, died on Monday, October 26, 2020, peacefully at his home. Private Memorial Services were held Friday, October 30, 2020, at Victory Christian Church in Balaton. Interment was in the Russell Cemetery. A public visitation is pending for the Spring or Summer of 2021, when the community he cared for so much can get together and celebrate with his family. Details on that event to be announced later.
Merlyn Rae Seaton was born in Marshall, Minnesota, on November 6, 1946, to Durwood and Leona (Oldenburg) Seaton. He was baptized and confirmed at the Presbyterian Church in Russell. Merlyn attended school in Balaton before joining the United States Navy where he served honorably during the Vietnam War.
Upon returning home, Merlyn worked the family farm with his father. He also drove truck, picking up milk for the creamery. Later, Merlyn began driving the school bus and made many friends with the kids along his route. Over the past couple decades, Merlyn enjoyed his role with the City of Balaton, caring for the parks and golf course.
Merlyn was proud to retire from the Balaton Fire Department after 27 years of service – a role he started in the Navy. He was avid about following many students as they competed on local sports teams, following many kids as they began their college careers. He also watched any Minnesota sports team when he wasn’t out golfing. Merlyn really loved to be around people and he was a regular at the coffee shop purely for the conversation.
Merlyn Seaton died on Monday, October 26, 2020, just 11 days shy of his 74th birthday.
He is survived by his 2 sons, Josh Seaton of Cottage Grove, Nick Seaton of Balaton; grandsons, Taylor and Maxwell Seaton; other relatives, and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Durwood and Leona Seaton, and sisters, Marilyn Mae and Alda Ann Seaton.
