In a season filled with spotty storms, one thing hadn’t been a factor this growing season: hail. For Brian Hicks, that all changed Saturday.
A strong and sporadic system darkened the skies over the area Saturday and left behind heavy rains and hail to the east of Tracy. One of the hardest hit areas was at the Brian Hicks farm about 6 miles south of Milroy.
The end result of the storm, which seemingly hovered over one area for some time, was a major potential loss of crops for Hicks and some other area farmers.
“We’ve never had this kind of hail,” said Hicks, who operates Nettiewyynt Farm Limited Partnership. “We’ve had hail a number of times in the past, but this — it hailed for over a half hour straight, it was crazy. We left Friday morning for Wisconsin, and I was thinking to myself, ‘You know what? We should be out of the hail season.’ We weren’t.
