Drumming up success

Trevor Smith and Marin Knott have plenty in common. They both are three-sport athletes, both excel in the classroom and are both at home in the percussion section of the Tracy Area High School band. And they have also both been chosen to represent TAHS as ExCEL Award nominees. Photo / Per Peterson

This year’s Tracy Area High School ExCEL Award nominees are Marin Knott and Trevor Smith, multi-sport athletes, standout students and, by the way, both percussionists.

The ExCEL Award — Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership — is a recognition program designed for high school juniors who are active in school activities and are leaders in their schools who demonstrate a strong commitment to community service. The award is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League’s corporate partner, Wells Fargo. Students are chosen by a selection committee from their respective school, must write an essay on their participation in school, and the community and submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher.

Every League member school is invited to nominate one girl and one boy for the ExCEL Award. Nominees must be a junior in high school; make satisfactory progress toward graduation; participate in an MSHSL fine arts and/or athletic activity; hold a leadership position(s) in their school; volunteer in their community; and meet MSHSL General Eligibility Requirements.
