While Khyle Radke at one time may have dreamed of being a history teacher, he was able to share an important history lesson with those in attendance at the Tracy American Legion Post 173 Memorial Day program Monday.

Radke shared the history behind the holiday along with the history of the poppies. He spoke of the start of Memorial Day as a way to honor fallen soldiers of the civil war by adorning their graves with flowers and miniature flags.

Over the years, the tradition has grown and now includes all fallen soldiers. Radke explained that many families also use the holiday as a way to place flowers and remember loved ones that are gone.

As the traditions of Memorial Day have changed, so, too, has people’s views on different topics affecting our military.
