There have been 185 traffic fatalities on Minnesota roads so far in 2024. At this time a year ago, that number was 146.
When Minnesota’s Toward Zero Deaths program was implemented in 2003, the only “DD” there was to worry about was drunk driving. In today’s tech-heavy world, there is another “DD” plaguing law enforcement: distracted driving. And while that “DD” has made it more difficult than ever for programs like TZD to slow the rash of deaths on Minnesota roads — and has given law enforcement one more thing to patrol — the rise in fatalities cannot be blamed on just one bad habit.
