Standing water in corn and soybean fields can be seen throughout the region. And while that’s not exactly unheard of, when it comes to the recent deluge in southwest Minnesota, the timing couldn’t be worse for farmers.
“The timing is an issue; the more established the crop is, the more yield you’ve already established,” said Jeff Coulter, a corn agronomist for the University of Minnesota Extension. “At this point, the crop is quite susceptible to (the rain). It’s unfortunate also that it’s happened at a point where we’re beyond the window for planting for corn.”
