Rural children’s mental health a growing concern

The challenges facing youth mental healthcare.

That was one of the topics of the Center for Rural Policy and Development’s (CRPD) fourth annual State of the Rural Minnesota update that was given last week.

The problem, reports Marnie Werner, CRPD vice president of research, is the growing number of school children with mental health problems. According to the most recent MN Department of Education Minnesota Student Survey, 29% of the kids responding said they deal with a long-term mental health issue. That’s 11 percentage points higher than in 2016.
