A new music maker in town

It would be easy to mistake Katelyn Elton for a junior or senior at Tracy Area High School. But one look at her inside the school’s band room tells a different story.

Elton is the new, fresh-face leader of the band at TAHS, and she’s just one year out from graduating from South Dakota State University. Being both new and young are two potential challenges that Elton knows she has to face.

“The relationship is just different; it’s easy to garner respect when you’re like a 45-year-old teacher,” she said.

And if you think she is easing her way into her new position, think again. Over the past few weeks, you could see Elton in the high school parking lot working with the marching band in preparation for the Box Car Days Grand Parade.
