Adeline died on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 at Waverly Gardens in North Oaks, MN.
Adeline Helen Van Lerberghe was born May 6, 1929 on a farm near Cottonwood to Camiel and Madeline (DePyper) Van Lerberghe. She was baptized at St. Eloi Church in Ghent and received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation at St. Clotilde in Green Valley. She attended country school, District 74, near Cottonwood and graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1945. Adeline attended Mankato Business College and later was employed at both the First National Bank in Marshall and the Marshall Fruit Company.
On November 8, 1949, Adeline was united in marriage to Lawrence Tholen at St. Clotilde Catholic Church in Green Valley, MN. They farmed east of Marshall for one year, then moved to a farm south of Wood Lake, MN. In 1960, Adeline and Lawrence began farming on a farm north of Tracy until their retirement in 1992. Adeline also worked part-time as a bookkeeper at Southwest Minnesota State College. After retiring from farming, Adeline was employed as a taster at Schwan’s Company for several years.
Lawrence and Adeline were charter members of St. Mary’s in Cottonwood. At St. Mary’s in Tracy, Adeline served as treasurer of the Altar and Rosary Society and was also involved in Catholic Daughters, serving in various capacities.
Adeline had fond memories of playing 500 in a neighborhood card club. After moving to Marshall, she enjoyed playing cards at the Senior Center, going out for coffee with friends, and occasional trips to the casino. Adeline also enjoyed traveling to the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, Hawaii, and the southern states of the U.S.
Adeline was a great baker. Her orange and cinnamon rolls were often requested for family gatherings and no Christmas was complete without several batches of Belgian cookies. Adeline took great pride in her grandchildren. She loved attending their track and cross country meets and hearing about their accomplishments.
Adeline is survived by her five children, Steven (Debra), Houston TX; Randy (Elaine), Balaton, MN; Mary (Chuck Howe), Forest Lake, MN; Kevin (Maureen), Lake Elmo, MN; and JoAnn (Steve Barstad), Lino Lakes, MN; two brothers, Kenneth VanLerberghe, Denver, CO; Ron VanLerberghe, Marshall; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
