The funeral service for John D. Meyer, 78, of Tracy, will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at Tracy United Methodist Church in Tracy, MN. Visitation will be Friday, February 2, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the church. Interment will follow the service at the Tracy Community Cemetery.
John D. Meyer was born on September 26, 1945, in Tracy, MN, to Wayne and Lorraine (Furan) Meyer. He was a fifth generation farmer and was living and farming on the land that was homesteaded by his great-grandparents. He was a farmer all his life and loved driving only John Deere Tractors. His favorite one was a ’70 John Deere that was his dad’s first new tractor.
John was baptized in the Lutheran Faith on October 28, 1945, at Modum Lutheran Church in Lake Sarah Township. He was confirmed at Tracy Lutheran Church on October 2, 1960. John graduated from Tracy High School with the class of 1963. He joined the Army National Guard after High School and was Honorably Discharged in June, 1971. He was a member of the U.S. American Legion for 54 years. He also served on the Board of Directors for Wheels Across the Prairie Heritage Center. He and son, Jeff, organized the Tractor Show at the wheels for every Box Car Days and also many tractor drives. He and Jeff drove their tractors in many parades and had many John Deere friends.
John and Sharon (Elliott) were married on October 3, 1964. Their only son, Jeffrey, was born in 1965. John and Sharon enjoyed many good years together and traveled to many states. Their favorite times included travels to Nashville, TN, and Branson, MO. John enjoyed rodeos, traveling with Sharon, John Deere tractors, playing pool, western movies and country music. Johnny Cash was his hero.
Most of all, John enjoyed being with and working with his son, Jeff, in the “shop” and visiting and having coffee with friends. Family was most important in his life. He loved giving grandchildren rides on the golf cart and his tractors and just being with them.
John died on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the Tracy Senior Living Center in Tracy after complications related to Alzheimer’s. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sharon, of Tracy; son Jeff and daughter-in-law Carrie; grandchildren Ross (Jennifer) and their children Janessa (Brandon, their daughter Yara), Blake, Skylar; granddaughter Megan (Erik) and their son Elliott; granddaughter Samantha (Lee) and their children Huxley and Hadley; and by sister LaVonne Youngs. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother Dennis, special cousin, Dale, and may other relatives and friends. John was honored to be a casket bearer over the years for more than 60 of those special people in his life.
Casual dress is encouraged. Memorials preferred to a charity of the donor’s choice.
