Nelder Medrud, Jr.

Lieutenant Colonel (retired) Nelder Medrud Jr. died peacefully in his Boulder, Colorado home, of Parkinson’s Disease, on Tuesday, April 18, 2017.  He was widely known as “Med” in Boulder, and “Butch” among his family of origin and friends in Minnesota.
He followed his 20+ year career in the United States Air Force with a 20+ year career as a meteorologist and manager for the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), and in retirement worked as a volunteer for the Rosa Minoka Hill Fund placing Native American students in college. He was 92 years old.
Med/Butch was preceded in death last April by his wife, Aya Mariagnes Medrud.
He is survived by two sons; Mark of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and David of Boulder, Colorado; two grandchildren, Sarah and Erik, both of Northern Idaho; and an extended family that includes Patrick Murphy of Washington D.C.
