A small church with a big heart

A roughly $90,000 residing project for Balaton’s St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was planned for June so the building would be spruced up for the September celebration of the church’s 140th anniversary.

Thanks to consistent rains that month, those plans got a bit derailed. But eventually, workers were able to get the job done, and the church is indeed ready to be shown off for the big day on Sept. 8.

“It was the perfect time to do it, to coincide,” said church member Brad Klukas, whose great-grandparents were among the founders of the church. “It was like, ‘We’re turning 140, lets get ‘er done.’”

140th coming up

St. Peter’s Ev. Lutheran Church’s 140th Anniversary service takes place Sunday, Sept. 8, at 10:30 a.m. A fifth generation great-great grandson of two founding families will be the guest pastor along with Pastor Andrus, and a guest organist from Martin Luther College in New Ulm will be in attendance as well. A free-will catered lunch will follow the service, with proceeds going to the exterior renovation project. An RSVP by Aug. 26 is requested to  bklukas04@hotmail.com.
