Michael Lynn Wessels, age 69, of Lake Shetek, formerly of Luverne, died Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the Sanford Luverne Hospice Cottage. He was born July 18, 1949, in Rock Rapids, IA, to Norman and Joyce (Reemts) Wessels. He graduated from Luverne High School in 1968. Mike later attended Mankato State University. He served his country in Vietnam in the United States Army.
Mike married Carol Van Engelenhoven on October 14, 1972, at the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne. The couple lived in Luverne. Mike worked at IBP in Luverne before he began working as a custodian at the Luverne Public Schools. He retired in 2012.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Luverne; the Currie American Legion; and the Luverne Eagles. Mike was an avid fisherman and sports fan. He enjoyed hunting, playing darts, spending time on Lake Shetek and the Minnesota Twins & Vikings.
Mike is survived by his parents, Norman & Joyce Wessels, Luverne; two children, Christal (Dan) Serie, Luverne; and April (fiancé, Nick Wassenaar) Sailor, Luverne; seven grandchildren, Carly, Ben, Will and Tori Serie,; Lexxus Wessels, and Hazel and Griffin Sailor; sister, Linda (fiancé, Richard Knapper) Schoon, Sioux Falls, SD; brother, Mark (Lin) Wessels, Rock Rapids, IA; niece, Karie Schoon; and two nephews, Aaron (Megan) Schoon and Sam Wessels.
He was preceded in death by his son, Andy Wessels on October 16, 2012; and a granddaughter, Lucie Sailor on March 29, 2008.
A time of fellowship was held on Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 5-7 pm at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Luverne; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorial service will be 10:30 am Wednesday, January 16 at the First Presbyterian Church, in Luverne, officiated by Pastor Jason Cunningham. Burial of cremains with full military honors provided by the Luverne American Legion & VFW will be in the Maplewood Cemetery in Luverne.
