4 local veterans will be honored in Garvin on Sunday with Quilts of Valor
Nancy McClain can’t help but get emotional when talking about giving back to veterans — it’s the same emotion she sees in the faces of service members when they receive a patriotic quilt through the Quilts of Valor program.
And on July 21 in Garvin, four local veterans will receive one of the special quilts during a special ceremony at the Garvin Auxiliary Hall at 2 p.m.
“When I first started this, I had no idea … I knew there would be emotion from the veterans, but I had no idea I would have those kinds of emotions,” said McClain, a quilter herself who lives in Wood Lake with her husband and helper, Don, who served for 27 1/2 years in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Army. “Each time you give a veteran … most of them will cry. Sometimes you have to say, ‘It’s OK to cry.’ We want them to know that we appreciate everything that they’ve done. They have provided us with the freedoms that we have.”
