GBS is an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It is characterized by the rapid onset of numbness, weakness and often paralysis of the legs, arms, breathing muscles and face. Paralysis is ascending, which means it travels up the limbs from fingers and toes towards the torso. Loss of reflexes, such as the knee jerk, are usually found.
The cause of GBS is unknown, and these days Haley gets around with the help of a walker and still relies on her wheelchair, which she has been told will be part of her life for another few years because of her fatigue. And even though it has affected her physically, she hasn’t let her condition affect her rosy outlook on life.
