Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers March 31, 1955 — Bernard Fultz, 28, World War II veteran, of Springdale Township in Redwood County, is the first man to be selected for the coveted Tracy Area Young Farmer of the Year Award, an award that will be made annually henceforth by the Tracy Junior Chamber of Commerce. It took judges more than three hours of deliberation to make the selection. He is an adult leader for the 4-H, and is affiliated, with the Springdale Climbers, which has both girl and boy members. Mr. Fultz gives his wife Eleanor the greatest credit for the success of the Springdale Climbers, as well as for much of his own achievements.

April 1, 1965 — Luther G. Lehmann, son of Rev. and Mrs. Wm. F . Lehmann of this city, recently received his ensign’s rating and the coveted wings as a naval pilot of jet aircraft. Lehmann was one of three young men of his Jacksonville, Fla., unit to receive wings upon completion of training at a Beeville, Texas, air station.

April 3, 1975 — For its developing End-O-Line Railroad Park, Currie received national recognition as a Bicentennial Community. Mrs. Hugh Gervais, chairperson and the Currie Bicentennial Committee, said they expect the park will be completed by the time of the community’s bicentennial celebration, set for July 4, 1976.

March 28, 1985 — The cloth shop in Tracy is changing hands. Bev Holland, rural Garvin, has sold the fabric store to Elaine Nyquist of rural Amiret. Mrs. Nyquist said the store will reopen soon. Mrs. Holland owned the shop one month less than five years.

March 29, 1995 — Twelve years of farming experience combined with a degree in agronomy brings a South Dakota man to Amiret. Rick Gullickson from Flandreau, SD, began a second career at the Amiret Grain Company last week. “I farmed for 12 years near Flandreau beginning during my high school and college years,” he says. “I graduated from South Dakota State in 1988 and pursued farming on a full-time basis.”

March 30, 2005 — Tracy Kid’s World is seeking a federal loan of up to $1.5 million to finance an 11,500 square foot daycare center near Tracy Elementary School. The non-profit group’s board of directors approved a resolution seeking the loan last week. “We’ve been told that qualifying for the loan will be no problem,” said Louise Noomen, Tracy Kid’s World board member. The estimated cost to build and equip the new Tracy daycare center is $1,409,160. Tracy Kid’s World board members asked for the $1.5 million loan, to provide a cushion for higher than expected costs.

April 1, 2015 — An April 14 public hearing is planned for a proposed 200-acre solar energy farm on the northwest edge of Tracy. The developer, Juwi Solar of Boulder, Colorado, says the planned solar “represents an estimated economic investment of $45 to $55 million in Lyon County,” making it potentially the largest construction project in modern Tracy history. At the peak of a 10-month construction period, 100 workers are expected to be on the site. According to a statement from Juwi, the company hopes to begin construction on the solar farm early next year, with completion targeted by the end of 2016. The solar energy project, called Minnesota Solar I, LLC., would be located on land leased from Ron McDaniel (THS ’68) of Apple Valley and Nyla McDaniel Nordvik (THS ’71) of Sammamish, WA.
