Remember When

April 7, 1955 — Last Saturday morning following services, the Lake Sarah Lutheran congregation broke ground on their new church in Garvin. The church is a merger of the Bethany Lutheran Church organized in 1884, formerly Swedish Augustana Synod, and the Modum Lutheran Church, organized in 1876, Evangelical Lutheran Church Synod.

April 8, 1965 — Only 171 electors went to the polls Tuesday to elect Dale D. Johnson, Sr. and Merrill Firebaugh, both unopposed candidates for the alderman jobs on the city council from Ward I and Ward II, respectively. Firebaugh, an incumbent, received all 30 votes cast in the west Second ward. Altogether he has served about eight years on the council.

April 3, 1974 — Ronald L. Grunden. career soldier from Walnut Grove, was recently promoted to sergeant first class at Ft. Hood. Texas. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard P. Grunden, Walnut Grove. Sgt. Grunden is a 15-year career solider, entering the army in July of 1960. He served twice in Vietnam, spent three years in Germany, as well as having duty at Ft. Carson, Ft. Riley and Ft. Jackson.

April 4, 1985 — Extensive remodeling is underway at the Mediterranean in Tracy. “It’s time for a fresh look,” said Gary Tholen, the restaurant’s owner-manager. “People have put up with the Med’s red and black decor long enough. As well as our customers have supported us, they deserve something better.” When complete, Tholen says the Mediterranean will have the finest dining atmosphere anywhere in the area. The new decor will center around a Victorian theme.

April 5, 1995 — The Mediterranean Club is planning to expand. If all goes as expected, the restaurant plans to begin construction on a 25x40-foot addition onto the Mediterranean’s north side. The Mediterranean is located on the south side of Hwy. 14, near the western edge of Tracy. The new addition, off of the Med’s existing bar area, will create room for a new game room. The room will include billiard tables, electronic dart games, a new juke box and three new color televisions for sport fans.

April 6, 2005 — Spc. Joseph G. Janssen, member of the Marshall 151st FA Division stationed in Iraq was honored with the “Sustainer of the Month” award for February. Spc. Janssen and Spc. Bauman from the company’s maintenance section, developed a tool that reduces the time of changing brake pads on a 1114 armored humvee by 50%. Spc. Janssen is the son of Gerald and Deb Janssen, Balaton.

April 8, 2015 — Jada and Callie Johns collected 400 to 500 pounds of recyclable plastic for Caps for Love. The rural Tracy girls collected the hard plastic container caps at drop off points located at St. Mary’s School and Tracy Food Pride. The caps came from consumer items such as beverages, shampoo, soap, and food products. The plastic caps were shipped to Florida, where they will be recycled, with proceeds being used to refurbish wheelchairs, walkers, and other medical aides for children. The 9- and 5-year-old, who are students at St. Mary’s School, helped organize the Caps of Love drive last fall.
