Sports Flashbacks

April 14, 1956 — Two Walnut Grove youth were named to an All-Star Basketball Team this past week. The selections were by The New Ulm Daily Journal in cooperation with the coaches and officials. Richard Wickman was named for the position of center, and Vance Anderson for guard. John DeBates was named to the second team.

April 15, 1965 — Lettermen back for the Tracy High School track team are Nick Kurtz, Howard Greenman, Bob Borner, Ken Blcek, Gary Hippe, Marv Kurtz, Warren Troseth, Nick Rolling and Paul Buchholz.

April 10, 1975 — Milroy senior high (9-12) girls who will participate in track this year are Rosie Beebout, Joyce Otto, Peg Zwach, Darlene Swedzinski. Jeannine Miller, Robin Schumacher, Joni Zwach. Ruth Bossuyt, Kathy Moudry, Rose Dolan, Janette Doland and Chris Hageman.

April 11, 1985 — Winning first place in the senior division of the Minnesota State Kids’ Wrestling Tournament was Jay Holbrook. First-place winners in the junior division were Travis Christenson and Chris Johnson.

April 12, 1995 — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton track team got in its second meet of the season, competing in a five-team meet at Brookings Thursday. Coach Al Landa was happy enough with many of the individual performances that he rewarded the team by letting them play volleyball in a light indoor practice Friday. A pleasant surprise for the Panther boys was freshman Brian Duffy, who took first in the 800-meter run. Also placing for the T-M-B boys were: Lucas Ludeman, second, 400-meter run, 52.5; Kurt Weedman, fourth, 100-meter hurdles, 18.18; Chad Willard, second pole vault, 11-0; Ludeman, tied for third in high jump, 5-4; and the 400 meter relay team (Kurt Weedman, Jason Ruppert, Chad Willard, Paul Zeug) fourth at 50.12.

April 13, 2005 — Light rain didn’t stop Panther golfers from getting in a meet at Raymond Monday. The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls beat MACCRAY 225 to 275. MACCRAY won the boys’ meet by three strokes, 181 to 184. “I am sure the rain cost each golfer a couple of strokes,” said Panther Coach Randy McIntire. Kayla Lau was the girls’ medallist with a 41. “I believe Kayla’s 41 was her best round ever,” said McIntire. Jenna Fischer, 53; Kim Lau, 65; and Nicole Hansen, 66; also scored for the Panthers.

April 15, 2015 — A four-run rally in the seventh, and an inning of scoreless relief from Moses Dolan produced the Panthers’ first win. Tayler Carlson was 2-4 with three RBI and two doubles. Austin Gleis scored three runs and contributed two hits and one RBI.
