Murray Powers, 68

Murray Powers, age 68, of Montevideo, Minnesota passed away Friday, January 10, 2025, at his home. Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 25, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Montevideo. Visitation will be Friday, one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Tracy at 2:30 p.m. on Friday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are respectfully requested to Saint Mary’s Elementary in Tracy.

Murray Francis Powers was born December 7, 1956 to Boyd and Colette (Lammers) Powers in Brookings, SD. The family farmed in eastern SD and he attended Saint Mary’s Elementary in Dell Rapids until the family moved to Tracy in 1969. He completed elementary school at St. Mary’s Elementary in Tracy. He attended Tracy High School where he excelled at football (senior captain), basketball, track (senior captain) and choir. He is fondly remembered for leading the football defense as the “Scrapper,” the position that aligned the defense before each play.

Murray graduated in 1975 and attended the Jackson Area Vocational-Technical Institute. He graduated in 1977 from the Construction Electrician program. He moved to Windom and worked for Ed’s Electric. In 1980 he moved to Colorado and lived first in Evergreen and then Boulder. He worked for Lakewood Electric and City Electric in Boulder before forming Powers Electric.

Murray returned to Minnesota, moving to Montevideo in 2012. He first worked in the deli at Coburn’s but later found the job he was best suited for with his construction background — at Monte Hardware, where he worked until recently retiring.

Murray enjoyed a good parade and was well-known for organizing some great Halloween parties.

Murray is survived by 4 siblings: Philip (Mary) Powers of Lawrence, KS; Gail Maenke of Bloomington, MN; Paula (Don Knigge) Enderson of Windom, MN; Rita (Paul) Klauda of Minneapolis, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
