Born to build

Soon-to-be fifth-grader Oliver Torkelson isn’t just a young student, he’s a business owner.

The creative kid has been building things with his dad, Scott Torkelson, co-owner of BT Quality Construction, ever since he can remember. After creating a Facebook page last summer to sell his creations, Oliver has tried his hand at many different art forms.

“I try to make some things and they don’t turn out. But I try a lot,” he said. “My mom thinks some of my ideas are a little crazy.”

“We try to let him be as creative as possible,” His mother, Kim Torkelson, said. “But sometimes they are a bit crazy.”

One of his favorite projects to create, and one that hasn’t yet reached the crazy threshold, are Oliver’s abstract paintings. Using a paint-pour technique, he drips paint on canvases to create geode and water-like designs. Choosing the colors for each painting is the most difficult part he said.
