John Daniels remembered for his big heart, love of children

A noticeable void will be felt at future Balaton events like Trunk-or-Treat and Fun Fest.

John Daniels, for nine years the heart and soul of the Balaton American Legion Post 237 — emphasis on the word “heart” — died Oct. 18 at the age of 74.

While Daniels was best known as the commander of the local Legion club, it was his passion for giving back that he is now being remembered for. And at the root of that passion was Daniels’ love of children, made evident by the drive he had from everything to donating money for large community projects, to something as simple and pure like handing out candy at events such as those cherished small-town community events.

“One thing really personal for John was handing out candy,” said Lynn Wichmann, a close friend of Daniels and fellow member of Balaton’s American Legion.
