Perry Schumacher, 84

A Mass of Christian Burial for Perry John Schumacher, 84, of Marshall, will be held on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Holy Redeemer Church beginning at 11:00 a.m. A public visitation will be held on Thursday, December 14, 2023, at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a rosary at 4:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Horvath Remembrance Center Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. Burial will take place at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Marshall following the funeral mass. Upon conclusion of the graveside service a luncheon will be at Holy Redeemer Church.

Perry John Schumacher was born on February 3, 1939, Westline Township in Redwood Co by Milroy, MN to William and Mary (Anton) Schumacher. He received the sacraments at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Milroy. He attended Milroy School and graduated in 1957. On November 20, 1957, he was united in marriage to the love of his life Julia Gagnon at St. Clotide in Green Valley, MN. The couple made their home on the family farm until they moved to Marshall in 2015. Farming was Perry’s passion. He was a dairy farmer until 2000. He then continued to farm until Guillian Barre’ made it difficult. Along with his wife, his son and daughter helped. His grandsons joined later. He continued to farm until his death.

He was a man that loved his family. Always determined not to be held back by his health problems having perseverance and dedication – encouraging his grandchildren and great grandchildren to work hard, be good and when you grow up you will do well!

Perry was a jokester. He loved to kid around and see others laugh. He loved doing puzzles in the winter with his wife. Playing cards with family. Watching tennis until all hours of the night, baseball, football and old westerns. Hearing about the sports his grandchildren and great grandchildren were involved in. Perry also enjoyed driving around and looking at crops. Much joy in his life was to have family walk through the door and spend time visiting.

Perry died peacefully surrounded by his family on Sunday, December 10th at Morningside Heights Avera Hospice.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years Julie; children Robin (Neal) Scharfe of Balaton, Debra (Burdell) McCoy, Jacqueline (Brad) Schild of Sioux Falls, SD, Keith Zarr of Davis, SD, Randall (Debi) Schumacher of Belle Plaine; grandchildren Nathan Giefer, Adam (Katrina) Giefer, Heather (Jan Willem) Streicher, Maranda McCoy, Brittany (Shane) Johnson, Ashley (Sean) Beck, Angela (Brian Henningsen) McCoy, Michael (Megan) McCoy, Jacob Rehwaldt, Joshua Rehwaldt, Benjamin Zarr, Megan (Sam) Stormoen, Tyler, Dylan, Noah and Alyssa Schumacher; great grandchildren Imogen Gregor-Giefer, Sydney, Hudson and Simon Streicher, Sawyer, Oakley, Lesley Johnson, Edeline and Elaina Beck, Jada and Kenna McCoy, Greyson Rehwaldt.

Perry was preceded in death by his parents William and Mary, sisters Shirley Smith, Mary Lou Urban, and brother James Schumacher, daughter Michelle Zarr and granddaughter Emily Schumacher.
