Trevor Smith stayed after school Monday to lift weights as he prepared for his junior season of baseball.

But he never made it home.

Halfway to Balaton after his light workout — at the intersection of highways 14 and 59 — the 17-year-old Smith, a three-sport athlete at Tracy Area High School, collided with a Freightliner semi headed south from Marshall, shortly before 4 p.m. The Chevy Malibu he was driving was pushed about 50 yards into an open area on the west side of Hwy. 59. Smith’s car was completely destroyed after the impact, which entirely collapsed the passenger’s side.
