Homer G. Dobson was born May 27, 1926 on a farm near Cleghorn, Iowa, to George and Edna (Slaubaugh) Dobson. He was baptized as a teenager at Cherokee Iowa Church of Christ, where he met his high school sweetheart, Betty Gene Moses. The two were married December 21, 1944. They attended Dakota Bible College, and then located in Arlington, SD. His first ministry was in Carthage, SD before traveling by train in 1948 to accept the call to preach at the Tracy Church of Christ. A ministry he served for over 50 years. Homer also ministered at the Lamberton Church of Christ 1951 to 2010. He envisioned, championed, and constructed a 77 bed, modern nursing home facility, The Christian Manor, serving as the Administrator for 25 years. Homer’s community service includes: Founding Member and 21 EMT Tracy Ambulance, Chaplain Tracy Civil Air Patrol, 2 term Mayor, County Health Board Chair, Western Community Health Board, Municipal Air Port Manager and Board member, and Honorary Chaplain Tracy Legion. He was an avid car enthusiast and collector, a private pilot, antique collector, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and travel. Homer’s greatest joy and highest calling was serving his Lord and Savior. His trademark salutation on his answering machine said it all, “Always remember Jesus Christ.” Thousands know him best from his presence, prayers, friendship and kind words of faith in the best of times and the worst of times. His heart was filled with the love of God and it served him and all of us well for 96 years.
He is survived by his son, Tom (Nancy) Dobson of Tracy; grandsons: Derek Dobson of Minneapolis and Cody (Alison) Dobson of Eden Prairie; great-grandchildren: Griffin and Malcolm Dobson; sister-in-law Darlene Dobson of Flagstaff, AZ; and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, 3 brothers, and 1 sister.
